Energy Efficiency Definition

The word efficiency is defined as "the ability to achieve a desired result without wasting energy."

When we talk about the energy efficiency rating of a home we are usually referring to the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) index.

The HERS index works from zero up, so a zero energy home, one that produces as much energy as it uses is given a zero rating.

A new home built after 2006 to the current American Standards for new homes will have a HERS Index score of 100 or above.

What you really want to know is "is my home energy efficient?" and the answer is likely "no, not yet." The typical existing home ranks at 150 on the HERS index.

Find a certified HERS Rater in your community to discuss how you can make your home energy efficient.
