Before you do ANY work on your house check which energy efficiency rebates, grants, loans and incentives that your state, county, district, city or utility company is offering. They will cover a wide range of energy efficiency upgrades including retrofit work, installing solar, even buying low energy lighting and more.

This link will take you to the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) which has the most up-to-date and comprehensive list of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency incentives I have found.

If you haven't already done so use this link to check on which energy efficient upgrades you can make to your home that will qualify you for a Federal energy efficiency tax credit to the value of up to 30% of the cost.
